Lower Stress and Anxiety
If you’re a yogi, there’s a good chance you are already familiar with the physical benefits of yoga. What you may not know is how essential oils can improve your yoga practice by helping to lower stress and anxiety.
Stress levels can be dramatically reduced when using aromatherapy during or after yoga practice. In fact, some studies have shown that inhaling lavender oil has been shown to decrease anxious feelings in those who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Lavender oil also helps users sleep better at night and reduces pain associated with headaches and migraines—two common symptoms of GAD.
If you feel overwhelmed during a stressful time, try adding peppermint or eucalyptus oil into your diffuser while practicing asana on your mat or even before class begins! These two oils help relieve headaches and nausea while increasing energy levels as well as helping fight off germs so everyone feels healthy at the studio too!
Alleviate Headaches and Tension
- This is great news for anyone who suffers from migraines, tension headaches, or other painful conditions.
- Aromatherapy can be used in tandem with a yoga practice to alleviate pain caused by these conditions.
- The best essential oils for headaches and tension are lavender, frankincense, clary sage and peppermint.
- Try these poses when you’re feeling particularly stressed out:
- Shoulder Opener Pose I (also known as Eagle’s Wings)
- Wide Legged Forward Fold with Back Bend
Improve Your Sleep Cycle
If you have trouble falling asleep, or if you have trouble staying asleep, essential oils can help.
Essential oils are natural and safe to use on your skin without side effects. Many of the most popular essential oils for sleep contain lavender and/or vetivert as their main ingredients. Lavender is great for helping calm anxiety before bedtime, while vetivert reduces stress and promotes a sense of deep relaxation. You can apply these essential oils topically (on your feet or chest), or diffuse them with an oil diffuser before bedtime.
Other popular essential oil blends include:
- Sleepy Time Blend (includes valerian root)
- Stress Away® Essential Oil Roll-On (lemon peel & copaiba)
Boost Your Immune System
In the summer, when you’re outside more often and exposed to more germs, it’s important to keep your immune system strong. Essential oils can help!
Some essential oils like rosemary and peppermint have been shown to be effective in boosting your immune system. They also have antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help prevent respiratory infections.
To boost your immunity with essential oils:
- Put two drops of eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief or washcloth, then place it near a fan so it will spread throughout the room.
- Light an aromatherapy candle that contains lavender or peppermint essential oil (my favorite brand is this one). You don’t need much — just one or two teaspoons worth will do fine! Just make sure there aren’t any pets nearby because they might accidentally lick some off their paws! It would be very sad if that happened…
Ease Menstrual Discomfort
While essential oils don’t replace traditional medicine and shouldn’t be used to treat any serious health conditions, they can be a helpful addition to your yoga routine. Certain varieties of lavender and chamomile are known for reducing menstrual pain. You can use them in a warm bath or massage into your abdomen before class begins.
If you have time, before class ends do some deep breathing exercises while lying on your back with crossed arms over chest at 4 o’clock and 8 o’clock positions (the meeting points of the bicep and forearm). Close your eyes and focus on each inhale/exhale cycle as it comes in through one nostril while blocking off the other with an index finger; retain that breath for two seconds before exhaling through both nostrils simultaneously; repeat until you’ve gone through 6 cycles total! This will help calm hernias down—little pockets that form under skin due to heavy lifting during yoga practice–and reduce scar tissue from previous surgeries/injuries caused by pressing too hard against our bodies when performing certain poses.*
You can use essential oils for your yoga practice.
You can use essential oils for many different things, including your yoga practice. Essential oils come from plants and herbs, and they work with the body’s natural systems to enhance wellness. Some of them are great for relaxing the mind and nervous system, while others promote focus and help you feel more energized.
Using essential oils in your yoga practice means using a few drops of an extract on your skin before or during class. This will give you an extra boost of energy as well as help relieve any stress that might be holding you back from having fun in class. The main thing to remember is to not get too much essential oil on yourself because it could cause irritation!
