What This Site Actually Covers

KnightsTreasure is a small, independent reference site for one corner of history: knights and castles, medieval warfare and fortification, archaeology and artifacts, coin hoards and antiquities, and the relics and regalia that outlast the people who made them. It exists to answer a short list of questions that come up again and again for anyone reading about the medieval past — roughly how much a hoard of gold and silver coins might be worth in raw metal, what a karat mark or hallmark actually means, how a medieval hide or virgate compares to an acre, how a year gets written in Roman numerals, and roughly what carat weight a cut gemstone might be from its measurements.

What It Isn’t

This is not a museum in the legal sense, not an auction house, and not an appraisal or authentication service. Nobody writing or maintaining this site is a licensed appraiser, a numismatist, or a professional archaeologist, and we don’t claim to be. KnightsTreasure is independent and supported by the advertising you see on the page — that is what pays for hosting and keeps the tools free, and we would rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise. We are not affiliated with any auction house, hallmarking authority, bullion or spot-price provider, museum, or heritage body whose names or standards happen to come up in our tools and pages.

Every figure our tools return is a rough estimate calculated from the numbers you type in — it is not a professional valuation. This matters most for the Precious Metal Melt Value Calculator, the Gemstone Carat Weight Calculator, and the Treasure Hoard Value Calculator: treat their output as a back-of-envelope starting point, not a figure to insure, sell, or declare against. Before you act on a real find, talk to a qualified appraiser, a numismatist, or (where it’s legally required) your local finds-reporting authority.

The Tools

With that scope in mind, here is what the site actually offers. Six free calculators, each built around one specific, recurring question:

• Precious Metal Melt Value Calculator — estimates the raw melt value of a gold, silver, or other precious-metal item from its weight, purity, and a spot price per gram.
• Gold Karat Converter— reads a 24k/22k/18k/14k mark or a 999/916/750/585 hallmark as a purity percentage and fineness.
• Roman Numeral Converter— turns any number from 1 to 3999 into standard subtractive Roman numerals, the notation on monuments, coins, and manuscripts.
• Gemstone Carat Weight Calculator — estimates a cut gemstone’s carat weight from its length, width, and depth and a shape/density factor.
• Treasure Hoard Value Calculator — totals a mixed coin hoard from the count of gold and silver coins and a value assigned to each.
• Medieval Land Converter— converts acres into medieval English land units: hides (120 acres), virgates (30 acres), and roods (quarter-acres).

Every entry, image, and fact in both comes from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons — we did not write original historical scholarship for these sections, and we’d rather say that outright than let you assume otherwise.
