What are chakras and what do they do?
Chakras are energy centers that are located in your body. They are like a system of energy vortices that act as a kind of antennae for your emotions and feelings, but also for the subtle energies of the universe, such as prana (the breath) and chi (energy). Chakras also help us connect to our intuition and inner wisdom.
The seven main chakras exist along the central axis, or spine, of our bodies: we have one each in front, behind and above our head; one at our solar plexus; one at our heart; one at… well… you get the idea by now! But if you want more specific details on where they all sit… read on!
The seven chakras.
The seven chakras are arranged in a specific order: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. Each chakra has its own color and associated quality. For example: the root chakra is orange or red and relates to physical survival; the sacral chakra is orange or pink and relates to sexuality; etc.. These qualities can be seen as aspects of yourself that need balancing or refining.
In this blog post we will focus on the first three chakras since they tend to be most challenged in our modern way of life (read more about how we can balance them here).
Root chakra (Muladhara).
The Root chakra is red and located at the base of your spine. It’s associated with survival, grounding and security.
It’s here where we connect to the earth. When this chakra is blocked, it can cause anxiety, lack of focus and a lack of energy. To balance this chakra try a grounding technique like tree pose (which involves standing on one leg while raising the other).
Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana).
- The color is orange.
- The location is lower abdomen, below the navel.
- It’s associated with creative energy and the life force of the body.
- Your sacral chakra helps you to be creative, to feel pleasure and give pleasure to others, and it’s also important for your sexuality.
Solar Plexus chakra (Manipura).
The solar plexus chakra is located in the abdomen above the navel. It’s color is yellow and governs your digestive system, small intestines, stomach, gallbladder and pancreas. A balanced solar plexus chakra can help you feel confident and secure.
The root cause of this chakra imbalance may be due to stress or anxiety. When you are stressed out, chances are that you will struggle to maintain a healthy diet as well as exercise regularly which can result in poor digestion if not addressed properly.
Heart chakra (Anahata).
The heart chakra is your energy center. It’s where you feel love and compassion, joy, forgiveness, and gratitude.
It helps you recognize that everything we experience on a physical level comes from the heart. The heart chakra represents our ability to give and receive love unconditionally – it’s also our way of connecting with others through unconditional giving.
The green color associated with this chakra symbolizes infinite opportunities for growth and self-expression through relationships with other people.
Throat chakra (Vishuddha).
The Throat Chakra, or Vishuddha in Sanskrit, is the fifth of seven chakras within your body. Its position is located at the throat and it is associated with communication, expression and creativity. The color associated with this chakra is blue (the same as our eyes).
The throat chakra has a lot to do with how you communicate with others, both verbally and non-verbally through their hands. If you have problems speaking up for yourself or expressing what you feel out loud then this could be due to an imbalance in this area of your energy system.
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna).
The third eye chakra is associated with the color indigo. Indigo is a very soothing color, but also has some energy to it. The element associated with this chakra is air, which makes sense because it’s located between the two eyes on your forehead.
This chakra is associated with wisdom, insight and clear communication. It also helps you to be more aware of your surroundings and surroundings that aren’t there yet (like in the future). You can imagine how important this ability can be when trying to make good choices for yourself or others!
The emotions associated with this chakra are intuition, inspiration and imagination; these are all things that come from within rather than without – so how does one get them? The food we eat affects our bodies’ chemistry which in turn affects how we feel about ourselves and others around us! Foods rich in iron such as spinach or lentils will help keep your mind sharp while those high in omega 3 acids such as salmon may help increase feelings of well being without increasing anxiety levels like caffeine might do at times when taken daily over long periods of time.”
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara).
The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head, where it is connected to all other Chakras. Its color is violet or white and it represents our spiritual connection with God. This chakra helps us to understand who we are and why we’re on this earth.
The Crown Chakra relates to our awareness, which directs all other functions within our nervous system via thoughts that reach through all seven chakras in order for them to work properly. It also connects us with the Divine while helping us connect with others spiritually by allowing us to see ourselves as part of something greater than ourselves – thus leading into feeling more connected and alive!
Let your energy flow!
Chakra balancing is a practice that helps you align your body, mind, and spirit. It can help you feel more relaxed and energized—but only if it’s done correctly!
Chakras are energy centers in the body. There are seven major chakras: (1) Root Chakra; (2) Sacral Chakra; (3) Solar Plexus Chakra; (4) Heart Chakra; (5) Throat Chakra; (6) Third Eye/Brow Chakra; and lastly, the Crown/Top of The Head Chakra.
Each one represents certain qualities or virtues: For example, the first root chakra controls our connection to Earth and stability while also controlling our physical needs such as food, shelter, etc.; whereas other lower chakras handle such things as communication through speech along with sexual desire—both high-energy activities! If these lower four are aligned properly then upper four serve us well too because they’ll be easier for us to reach their full potential.”
