A Medieval Costume is All You Need
In a quirky new competition, Jetstar is calling on all knights, lords, maidens, and jesters to participate in an epic live-action role-play (LARP) simulated battle. The tournament, dubbed the Knights of the Skies, will have brave and noble Aussies competing to win a share of over $50,000 worth of flights. To be in the running, contestants must take a photograph of themselves in their finest medieval getup, which can be as DIY as they like. “The more DIY the better,” says Jetstar, with suggestions ranging from dusters as swords to pillow suits of armor and medieval helmets that resemble frying pans.
The Battle of the Skies
The competition will be hosted by Australian comedian and radio star Liam Stapleton, who will invite the best pictures to a real-life LARP competition in Melbourne. The winner will take $50,000 worth of flights, while the runners-up will each receive $1,000 worth. The competitors will face off against long-time LARP warriors from Australia’s largest LARPing organization, Swordcraft. The organization’s head of story, Brett Duncan, who plays Co-Captain Greg, The Town Guard of Sudenberg, has visited several real-life castles and has a bucket-list location of Japan or the United Kingdom.
A Castle Lover’s Dream
Brett Duncan, from Lilydale in Victoria, has a fascination with medieval history, which has led him to get into the LARPing world. “Castles weren’t just fortresses,” he says. “They were homes, statements of strength, and often the heart of entire communities.”
The competition will celebrate Jetstar’s 21st birthday and will be held on May 25. Here are some of the castle destinations that Jetstar has listed on its network:
- Kryal Castle, Ballarat, Australia
- Thorngrove Manor, Adelaide, Australia
- Iandra Castle, Greenethorpe, Australia
- Cinderella Castle, Disneyland Tokyo, Japan
- Luna Castle, Da Nang, Vietnam
- Larnach Castle, Dunedin, New Zealand
These destinations offer a range of medieval experiences, from jousting displays and archery demonstrations to maze traversals and dragon towers.
