The first Thanksgiving was not the celebration of a bountiful harvest.
It’s true that the pilgrims invited the Wampanoag tribe to join them in thanksgiving, but this event was not actually known as “Thanksgiving.” The feast that took place at Plymouth Rock on November 14th, 1621, was hosted by Governor Edward Winslow and William Bradford to celebrate their good fortune following a long year of hardship. In fact, there are no records of any Native American tribes referring to this particular feast as “Thanksgiving.”

It’s common knowledge that those famous headdresses worn by Chief Massasoit (who led his people during this first gathering) were made from fowl feathers and were reserved for warriors only. The feather bonnets we associate with Indians today are actually part of “Native American” costumes created specifically for Hollywood films starting in Westerns like Stagecoach (1939) or Little Big Man (1970), which starred Dustin Hoffman as Petahtona). It wasn’t until 1978 when Indian-influenced fashion took off after singer Cher started wearing her style inspired by designer Halston’s haute couture collections including turban-style hats and feathered earrings on stage during performances with Sonny Bono at Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas showroom called “The Golden Nugget Revue”.
